Plot Analysis

The story centers on a Genie who has been imprisoned in a magic lamp for roughly a thousand years (specifically, 983 years). His driving force is revenge against the girl who condemned him to this tragic, long imprisonment. Flash forward to the present day, and a young woman finds the magic lamp, freeing the Genie. The twist? She is the modern-day incarnation of the very person who imprisoned him in the past!

The Genie is bound to grant her three wishes, but his true goal is to corrupt her, driven by a pact he made with God: if he fails to find even one virtuous person, he will be sent to hell. Ironically, the girl was born a psychopath, which initially makes the Genie believe his task of corruption will be “extremely easy”. However, the real plot difficulty emerges because the girl is, against all odds, extremely virtuous. She was raised strictly by her grandmother, who instilled strong principles, rules, and a deep sense of goodness, making her a disciplined “soldier” in being a good person.

Will Genie corrupt her or go to hell?

Will Ki Ka-young remain virtuous?

Will their true love save them or destroy them?

Character Analysis

THE GENIE

Genie make a wish k-drama

The Genie is an unexpected delight, proving that looks can be deceiving. Despite being the powerful, long-suffering character who should logically be “the very serious, the very strict, the very evil one,” he is instead portrayed with an extremely funny character.

Having been locked away for a millennium, he is completely out of touch with the current human way of life. This time warp makes him behave like a small child—constantly doing foolish things, wanting to learn, play, and discover new things about modern life. This role reversal is hilarious… the ancient, powerful being is the comedic relief, constantly being confused and exploited by the human girl who “constantly beats him up”.

KI KA-YOUNG

Genie make a wish k-drama

In contrast to the lighthearted Genie, the female lead (the incarnation of the one who cursed him) takes on the role you would typically expect from the much older, evil Genie. She is the very strict one and due to the label of “psychopath” that has stuck to her, is perceived by others as “evil and insensitive,” displaying “complete indifference and insensitivity”. Yet, underneath this cold exterior, she adheres strictly to the principles of goodness taught by her grandmother.
Her dynamic with the Genie is wonderfully unique: she is tough on him, even physically abusing him to vent her pent-up frustrations, knowing he can’t be killed!

The growing feelings between the two create a heartbreaking dilemma: she doesn’t want to make bad wishes because she has principles, but as she starts to love him, she also doesn’t want to harm him, which forces her to consider making those bad wishes.

For the Genie, loving her means he no longer wants to corrupt her, which, according to his deal, means he must sacrifice himself and face eternity in hell. This emotional tension adds a painful, deep layer to their relationship.

Personal Opinion

Beyond Rom-Com: The Emotional Rollercoaster

For about 9 episodes, we get to watch an interesting romantic comedy, but after episode 10, the drama takes a dramatic, serious turn!

The tone shifts drastically to “extremely intense” and “very heavy scenes,” transforming the whole situation into a profound drama. The biggest reveal is that the Genie’s understanding of his past is flawed. The story is much more complex and tragic than he initially believed, and when he finally learns the truth about what happened to him, he is left utterly “lost” and “desperate”.

The series gains “a great depth” and “tremendous cinematic quality” from episode 11 onwards. The writers incorporate deeply inspired elements, referencing historical narratives like the story of Sodom and Gomorrah from the Bible, and even touches of Greek mythology. These final episodes are “extremely impressive,” culminating in the reveal of the girl’s last wish, which is described by many (included myself) as a highly emotional and intensely moving scene.

My only criticism, personally, was the awkward transition between the extremely tragic scenes and the subsequent humorous ones in the ending, which broke the emotional flow.

Final Thoughts

Genie make a wish k-dama 2025

I wholeheartedly, 100% recommend Genie Make a Wish.

It’s not just an entertaining watch, it’s one of the most beautiful and interesting stories I have ever seen in k-dramas! It’s a series that awakens strong emotions, as it explores profound themes like human greed and the potential for evil! Ultimately, it’s a didactic story, showing the unexpected side effects of a wish and delivering the powerful message that sometimes, a wish we think is for the best can turn out much worse than our current reality.

It teaches us to appreciate that our reality is often “much rosier than we thought it would be if something were different”. The love story is unique, beautiful and strong! If you want a series that will keep you engaged and thinking long after the credits roll, this is it!!!

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve watched it, or answer any questions you might have if you plan on watching! 🙂
