The most important decision I have ever taken…
19-08-2024

My dearest readers,
Today we are back with a storytime that every one of us can relate to because we all had to make this type of decision.
- MY HIGH SCHOOL STORY
Months before my high school final exams, my teachers had warned me that if I don’t take private lessons I wouldn’t succeed in getting to any university. They tried to pressure me but I didn’t give up. I wanted to study on my own and never become a financial burden to my dear father even if he always told me that I need to take private lessons in order to succeed.
Months passed by and I kept on getting worse and worse in my lessons. Two months before the final exams, I started to realise that the exams were completely made up for the students who were taking private lessons. I felt awful and considered this so unfair for the ones that didn’t have money or didn’t want to have private lessons because of the major amount of time that had to be taken away every day from them. After having a long conversation with my father he told me that I should not be discouraged and that he believed in me. In addition he told me that if I managed to achieve the required score to go to university I shouldn’t worry no matter the financial burden. I had made my mind up, no matter what I was going to study Digital Marketing, even if I didn’t have the required score I would still participate in the next year’s exams. So I started studying every day more and more hours. 1 hour the first day, 2 hours the second and until the last week before the exams I found myself studying 20 hours per day. I used to sleep for only 2 or 4 hours per day and drink lots of tea, so that I can hold myself together without falling asleep every 5 seconds.
After these very tiring weeks for my body and psychology, the final exams ended and about 3 weeks later the results came out. Not only I was able to study Digital Marketing but also I had the required score to go to many other universities. I honestly can tell you that my teachers, family and I were shocked because none of us expected it.
2. THE PRESSURE FROM MY TEACHERS
The real pressure was just about to begin! After the exam’s results came out I got a call from my high school. They told me to go there with my father on a Saturday morning…not weird at all. When i arrived at the highschool with my father the headmaster had planned to persuade my father so that I don’t go to university to study digital marketing. The headmaster’s opinion was that I should study far away but I didnt want that. As for me, I had to endure my Latin teacher who was about to brainwash me for the next hour. At first she asked me where I want to study. I told her that I had made my mind long before the results came out and I wanted to study Digital Marketing.
For a very annoying reason my teachers and headmaster thought that it was not ok to stay with my family because for them this meant that I wouldn’t meet new people and make new life experiences. They tried to put pressure both on me and my father so that no matter what I had to leave my family and go anywhere else except the university that was close to my family. I even remember that another teacher told me that if I don’t leave I would be destroyed/lost case. They also told me that according to my score I can study Philosophy, Literature, History, so I had to leave at all costs etc.
3. HOW I MADE MY CHOICE
- 1. I had done my research and I had found how much potential the” Digital Marketing ” university would provide me. Endless job opportunities and amazing courses. I would study courses such as Psychology, Sociology, Communications, Business Administration, Advertisment, Social Media, Law and e-Journalism etc.
- 2. I realised that I didn’t really want to study far from home. I felt that I would get depressed inside a house for four years or more all alone and by the way just don’t forget that I didn’t even want to study anything else, so what was the point to leave?
- 3. I didn’t want to leave my father and younger brother! As a single parent family, I felt the need to be there for them to support them any way I could. I also thought that I preferred to pass these years with them, rather than being alone in a small apartment with a buch of cockroaches dancing around me.
- 4. I didn’t want to burden my father financially even if he kept telling me that I am free to choose what to study and where!
4. DID I MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE? 6 YEARS LATER
After these 6 years I still to this day don’t regret at all my decision. I feel like I did what I had to do for my own good and of course my family’s well being. Not only I made the right choice but I also continue this path by starting my MSc in Digital Marketing. Thank God I loved most of the courses of my university and never, not even once, had to resit an exam and I hope that will be the case with my MSc as well. Because of the choice that I made I had the chance to meet my best friend Mary and study in an Institute about Web Programming. On 17-07-2024 I took my first steps into something I always thought of doing and that was creating a blog with my brother Stelios.
Yours truly,
Nikoletta
