When you underestimate …
22-07-2024

My dearest readers,
I created this story to communicate what injustice brings. What happens when you underestimate a good person and you cause him nothing but harm. I hope you will like it!
Once upon a time there was a heartless King ruling his unfortunate people. The king , was so blinded by his great kingdom, that he didn’t realise the big threats that are right in front of his eyes. Because, in fact, he was the one that was causing them! He was supposed to rule until his last breath and that was something that made him very reckless and a big fool. His whole life was surrounded by gold, slaves and obedience. He knew no hunger, no poverty, no helplessness or distress. He was always the chosen one, the one that everyone deserved to die for. But instead he was going to taste justice from the same hand that had served him all his life but he never received justice…
In his royal court , there was a young man. His name was Gregory. He was one of the most obedient and quiet compared with the others. Gregory, was the son of a very poor family that the castle used for 10 generations as servants. Gregory was the youngest and smartest. He was always very observant and remarkably able to give great advice to his king any time he was asked to. So, Gregory grew up next to his king and learnt everything…maybe too much of everything. Gregory became a great warrior in order to be able to protect his king and the king himself ordered one of his son’s teachers to learn Gregory all the known sciences back then, so that he can be of great Kingdom’s use. The king never appreciated Gregory’s loyalty or his family’s services for generations. He never gave him a raise or a higher position in the castle. Gregory never complained. He always understood that without the king his family would have died long ago from hunger. That is why, he pushed himself everyday, so that he can become most of useful to the King. The approval that the king would give him was the greatest achievement that he could have ever imagined…at least until his 25th birthday. That day everything became dark. His heart was flooded of great hatred and full of vengeance. It was the day Gregory had to take the throne! It was the day king’s true colours painted the Truth that he didn’t want to see all these years!
The thing about injustice is the fact that payback is something that comes natural even to the most sophisticated of us. It is something that comes from the strong instict of survival in this enormous jungle. When someone knows their worth, they choose to fight for their rights and become hunters of the justice. This justice for Gregory was nothing but the throne. The same throne that someone else had and had made them blind. The same throne, that gave the right to the elder lion…the king, to take advantage of the young lion’s pure and young heart…Gregory’s. So when the day comes, Gregory will decide that he has to stand firm for himself and take down the King. That day had come and that day was today…
The day of his 25th birthday, the king allowed Gregory to spend time with his family far from the obligations of the castle. That day, Gregory, despite the king’s permission, decided to go to the castle and visit the king to thank him personally. When he approached the king’s chambers, he became a witness of the ruthless king’s beliefs. He was about to knock the door, when he heard the king talking to his only son. They were talking about Gregory. The king’s son was very jealous of Gregory’s sharp mind and strength. He was certain that Gregory’s intentions were to murder them and take over the throne. The king did not agree with his concerns because he believed that Gregory had always cared for his approval and nothing more…King: ”Don’t be foolish. That is absurd. Gregory is just a little kid that wants my approval and nothing more. Could you even think that a child that we have used along with his family for 10 generations, could possibly over throne us? Mark my words young one, Gregory can be tossed aside to the dogs and even thank us for our kindness. Furthermore, don’t you forget what happened to his sister 5 years ago? You played with her for as long as you wished and when she became an inconvenience by getting pregnant we slaughtered her and no one suspected anything. We told them that she died from a sadden deathly disease and they bought it as they always do with their poor and tiny brains of them.” The son did not give up… he told his father that Gregory’s thirst for knowledge and strength were nothing but proof that he meant to harm them. The King started to show some kind of concern over his son’s words. He thought for a couple of minutes and told his son that he doesn’t believe that Gregory is even capable of betrayal, but in any case, if there is a possibility that these concerns were to be true, Gregory along with his family, should be removed immediately. So they planned to kill the whole family the day of the heir’s birthday, 3 months after Gregory’s birthday.
And everything is done. Gregory had taken over the throne the second he heard about their plan to kill them over just a single suspicion and the fact that his sister had this tragic end. It was all over. Their kingdom, their throne, their heartless miserable lives were long forgotten in his mind. The game of throne had began! Because Gregory will be ready. Because Gregory in 3 months from his birthday will sit on that throne. But Gregory could never allow himself to become just like them. He promised that he will be always good and never evil. So he wasn’t going to kill them. But his plan kills with the ink of his pen, because everything will begin with a single letter. He immediately went back home and wrote a long letter to the soldiers of the kingdom…but only to those that he knew that have been wronged by the king. Of course, he didn’t write who he was in the letter because he feared of a potential leak of information. After the approval of the soldiers he told everything to his family. Gregory explained everything to them and they were most eager to help him. In order to detect the potential traitors among the soldiers, he sent after the first letter, a second one. In the second one he wrote a different information to each one of them to see which soldier will betray him to the king. And of course some of them did. So, Gregory detected them and removed them from his plans before they even learn who he was.
The king was starting to go mad. He knew that someone was plotting against him but he couldn’t find out who it was. After Gregory detected the traitors, he sent a third letter in which he explained the plan and gathered all the soldiers to meet him. And that is how it happened… they gathered and they discussed about the big plan. Three months later, at the heir’s birthday it was to take place a big feast and of course do not forget…the planned death of Gregory and his whole family. Everything was ready, except Gregory who wasn’t ready to die.
So Gregory, took action as was planned all along. That night, the soldiers merged into the ire of Gregory. No one was going to die except from the ruling of this kingdom. At the heir’s feast the soldiers put some poison inside the royal food that causes a long sleep. Everyone went to sleep before even realising it. The king, the queen and their son were removed from the palace. Gregory took them to an abandoned island far away from the kingdom. He waited patiently until they had woken up to say goodbye…goodbye even if they were his oppressors…and murderers. When they woke up they found themselves tied up and shocked because they didn’t know what had happened. Gregory said those words to them before he had decided to leave and never come back: ” It seems like the snakes have woken up from their life long lethargy. Look at yourselves, you are such fools to believe that you could torture so many people and never be caught. It is over, I have ended this vicious circle of yours. I an the King and I am going to live in peace and serve my kingdom with justice and honour. I want you to know that I had dedicated my whole life to you. All my life I just wanted to be able to be next to you, to protect you and help you, because I believed in you. I was never going to betray you. It was you who betrayed yourselves with your schemes and your dark poisonous hearts. I overheard you 3 months ago when you planned my death. My family’s death. And I don’t want to even think what you had done to my sister. You cruel animals. It was this day that I planned everything… and here we are. With your end and my beginning. Do not be afraid because I won’t kill you, you will live here for the rest of your pathetic lives. My soldiers will make sure you will never leave from this island. They will bring you food, clothes and medicine but we both know that I took you something so vital that you are already dead. Goodbye, have a nice life and repent before you die, because on this island you are going to have plenty of time to think what you have done”.
Gregory, returned to his Kingdom to rule with honour and justice. To feed the poor and bring peace. To bring kindness and heal the wounded. To serve and not to be served. To save and not to kill. To love and not to hate…And they lived happily ever after!
Yours truly,
Nikoletta
