The series that has stolen my heart is called Hidden Love. I would describe it as one of the cutest C-dramas currently available, built around an incredibly sweet and compelling love story. If you are looking for a highly romantic series that perfectly balances tender moments with lighthearted comedy, all wrapped up in a beautiful, genuine romance, then this is absolutely mandatory viewing!!!

Plot Analysis

The heart of this story belongs to our adorable central couple: the bright-eyed girl, Sang Zhi (portrayed by Zhao Lusy), and the sensitive boy, Jia Xu (portrayed by Chen Zheyuan).

The driving force behind the early narrative is the significant age difference. Sang Zhi first meets Jia Xu when she is just 14 years old, and he is 19. While this age gap might be manageable in different life stages, at this time, it creates an impossible barrier. Consequently, the relationship begins with a deeply platonic crush. Sang Zhi develops strong feelings, but a romantic relationship is clearly unattainable due to the vast difference in their ages and maturity levels.

Their initial meeting occurs when Jia Xu, who is her older brother’s close friend, visits their home. For Sang Zhi, it is undeniably love at first sight. Jia Xu, naturally, treats her with the casual affection one would show a child… his friend’s little sister.

As she grows, Sang Zhi lives with a constant internal struggle: the fear that he would either already have a girlfriend or eventually find one, crushing her hopes of ever being together. Their lives were simply not aligned… he was immersed in university life. On the other hand, she was still navigating middle school, preventing any meaningful connection.

The series skillfully uses frequent “time jumps” to show the years passing and the characters growing, a characteristic that keeps the pace engaging.

During one of their later chance meetings, before another significant jump forward in time, a pivotal and moving incident takes place. Sang Zhi gets the heartbreaking impression that Jia Xu has a girlfriend. We witness her deep emotional pain, crying profusely. He, unaware of her feelings for him, cannot understand her distress. This moment serves as Sang Zhi’s painful realization that their relationship might be impossible, forcing her to accept reality and move forward with her life.

Years later, she finally goes to university. And then, fate intervenes. Completely by chance, they meet again.

Initially, Sang Zhi seems resistant, almost holding onto a sense of “hatred” or resentment toward him. She desperately wants to avoid the pain of rekindling her past, unrequited feelings. Interestingly, Jia Xu is the one who actively seeks her out this time. He seems to genuinely enjoy her company, appearing lonely… perhaps having missed their friendship. Through this complex emotional tension, they slowly reconnect and rebuild their friendship. Now, both are adults and we witness a beautiful shift: intense romantic feelings begin to develop on his side, too. This is where their genuinely beautiful relationship finally takes root!!!

Character Analysis

Sang Zhi (The Girl)

Initially, Sang Zhi is presented as an impressionable young girl who experiences love at first sight. She develops intense feelings for Jia Xu but lives with the constant fear that he’ll find someone else. From the very first second, she loved him so truly and deeply!

He was the dream of her life and so, she did everyting in her power to make this dream come true!!!

However, the major surprise is her maturity when she learns about Jia Xu’s struggles. Despite their five-year age gap, she steps up with great maturity, love, and understanding to support him. She stands by him, comforting him and showing him how much she loves him, even when facing negative reactions from her own family. She is the one who demonstrates the unexpected strength and support!

Jia Xu (The Boy)

Jia Xu is initially seen as older, more independent, and mature by Sang Zhi. Because of the age difference, he first treats her like a child…as his friend’s little sister.

When they reconnect as adults, he genuinely likes her and appears vulnerable, lonely, and in need of her company and friendship. The big reveal is that he is actually dealing with serious family and financial problems, which Sang Zhi did not know about. These circumstances have made him much more vulnerable, sensitive, and alone. The audience is surprised to learn that he is the vulnerable one in the relationship, having been forced to mature very early due to difficult conditions.

The beautiful thing about him is that he always cared about her, respected her and wanted to protect her! At first as a great friend and later as a great boyfriend!

.

Sang Zhi’s Brother (The girl’s brother)

The brother plays a crucial role as he is not only Sang Zhi’s sibling but also Jia Xu’s best friend. This creates a significant problem for the couple: how to tell him and how he will accept the new relationship. His reaction is noted as a “strong negative reaction” when he learns about their situation, adding emotional conflict to the story.

Personal Opinion

Hidden Love is the first C-Drama that I have ever watched till the very last episode!

I found the ending of Hidden Love deeply beautiful! It provided a truly beautiful and emotionally resonant conclusion that confirmed the love between them was mutual and powerful. It was not simply a one-sided crush that finally came true, but a blossoming shared devotion.

One of the most touching aspects of the finale was the inclusion of déjà vu scenes, where the characters re-enact their very first meeting and various conversations they had over the years. This technique beautifully tied the story together, reminding us of the long, winding path their love took. The entire story is thoughtfully constructed. The relationship only blossoms after Sang Zhi is a legal adult, ensuring the handling of the age difference is appropriate and avoids any strange or uncomfortable dynamics.

Do I Recommend It?

I highly recommend you add Hidden Love to your watch list. It is a wonderfully sweet and charming love story. Especially if you have never watched a C-drama before, this is the perfect, gentle place to start. I would hesitate to suggest diving straight into a historical C-drama, which involves a complex, distinct culture.

Start with this series! It’s an accessible rom-com with a captivating and sweet narrative. With 25 episodes, I firmly believe that if this genre—a sweet love story with a dash of comedy—is to your taste, you will fall in love with Hidden Love, regardless of your familiarity with C-drama culture.

That wraps up my review of Hidden Love! I am genuinely excited to read your comments. If you haven’t seen it yet, tell me if this review has convinced you to give it a try!

Enjoy:)
