MY BSC THESIS…
27-07-2024

My dearest readers,
The title you just read was actually the title of my Bachelor’s thesis. So, I can really say that I have turned the subject into science.
The people that know me, family, friends and school classmates, know that I didn’t want Social Media. And it was true. I honestly didn’t want them. I was a teenager and I considered them dangerous-let alone for someone that young-. I thought that I was protecting myself from mistakes that a teenage person could have made. I only started having a presence on Social Media when I was 18 years old. It wasn’t even something that I wanted, it was something that was required from my university because we had a lot of lessons on Social Media and the exams had them included as forms of experiment. When I look back I honestly believe that I made the absolute right choice by distancing myself from Social Media as a teenage girl. People in that age make some irrational choices and it becomes really dangerous when it comes to exposing yourself so much.
What I have learnt is that most of the time, Social Media says a lot about someone’s character but it is much more complicated than it seems. Social Media attracts you to take the wrong decisions and that is not really easy to detect when you cross the line. Let me explain this because it is a very complicated subject.
Let’s take a public content creator. A public content creator is obligated to have all day up to date content. That is a lot of pressure and major needed commitment. I see it to myself as well. Now that I take my first public steps, I need to make sure that my blog is 100% on point, updated everyday and synced to my Social Media platforms. The fact that I need to spend endless hours on writing posts, editing the blog and the articles and of course, taking 1 million pictures in a week in order to have them ready for my posts.
So, when all of this is happening, someone might go off the rails. People start to expose more and more about their most private moments and lives in general. With all that happening, they end up making themselves highly exposed in any kind of dangers. Another thing is hate. People think that it is totally ok to threat and curse people they don’t know. They honestly think that people they don’t know deserve to be humiliated on their accounts. With that being said, you can understand that this has a major effect on content creators. To be immune to this type of behaviors -sometimes- they become mean and that passes on their content. Of course we have and the other effect. The…”you are perfect” reactions. When people get that type of reactions they become arrogant, narcissists and blinded by this type of approval and ”worship”. They start behaving rude and think that everyone is beneath them.
Social Media is a world that becomes more and more real everyday. People comapare themselves and this makes them having jobs done on their face and body. It is natural and uderstandable for people to feel that they are not enough when they see others on Social Media that appear to be perfect. But most of the time it is all photoshop and needles that do the magic and not nature.
On the other hand, children behave like they are not children because of Social Media. Parents behave like they are not parents because of the amount of time they spend on Social Media. We even see children being used for views and it is crystal clear that this is happening without their consent. These little kids are going to experience bullying or at least, unwanted reactions because some people decided that it is ok to expose a baby naked, or eating and are a mess or the moment their diapers are being changed. These kids are going to grow up and realise the irreversible damage in their lives that was caused by their own parents. This will be something so hard to handle even for the most composed people. We are going to have endless fights in each family because the parents decided to expose their kids. Mark my words…I am afraid that we are going to hear from the TV news even some tragic accidents because of that!
A big part of the Social Media world, are influencers. Influencing, is a great opportunity as a job for young people to have an income. It is one of the most looked down jobs right now but the successful ones, have actually become rich…or very rich. But of course, influencers should be honest with their audience and never try to take advantage of them by promoting products that have not been tried on. The thing is that young people should always be careful with this type of job because it can lead them to identity crisis. We must always remember who we are and never make amends with something that we don’t want to do just for some extra money.
In conclusion, Social Media is the future, but every future comes with some sneaky dangers. So, we should always use them with care. In every step we take we should keep reminding ourselves that we should never forget who we want to be and never do something wrong to us or to the others!
Yours truly,
Nikoletta
