Plot Analysis

Salem’s Lot (2024) arrives as a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic vampire novel, aiming to recapture the chilling tale for a modern audience. It’s written and directed by Gary Dauberman (known for modern horror hits like It and Annabelle) and marks the first feature-film version of King’s 1975 book, following two earlier TV miniseries in 1979 and 2004. After a long journey to the screen – the project was delayed multiple times and ultimately premiered via the Max streaming service in October 2024 – this film sets a nostalgic tone with its 1970s setting and a promise of old-school, slow-burn horror vibes.

Ben and a small band of townspeople arm themselves to battle the lurking evil in Salem’s Lot. The story follows Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman), an author who returns to his quiet hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot, Maine, hoping to write about a sinister old mansion that haunted him in childhood. At first, Ben reconnects with a few locals (including a young woman named Susan) and tries to settle back into unassuming small-town life. However, it’s not long before strange occurrences grip the community: residents fall inexplicably ill, children go missing, and an eerie unease spreads through the town. A mysterious European antique dealer that lives into the long-abandoned Marsten House on the hill, causes these unsettling events. Before long, Ben and a handful of brave townsfolk come to realize that their town is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire and his loyal servant. What follows is a tense battle of wills between this ragtag group of residents and the ancient evil infecting their town – a classic tale of ordinary people banding together against a creeping nightmare, all under the looming shadow of that cursed house.

Personal Opinion
In my opinion, Salem’s Lot (2024) ends up a mixed bag of effective atmosphere and missed potential. On the positive side, the film successfully captures a creepy small-town vibe in its first half – the early scenes are moody and filled with that slow-build tension true to classic ’70s horror. The cast also does a solid job; seasoned actors like Alfre Woodard and Bill Camp lend some gravitas, and they make the town’s inhabitants feel believable. However, as the story progresses, the movie starts to stumble and ultimately doesn’t stick the landing. The final act, in particular, left me disappointed – without giving away any spoilers, it feels rushed and underwhelming, lacking the payoff that such a tense buildup deserves. Part of the issue might be the challenge of condensing King’s sprawling novel into a two-hour film; the narrative becomes choppy at times, and it honestly feels like key scenes or connective tissue were trimmed out in the editing room. Even some major confrontations that should be highlights end up coming off muted or cliché. By the time the credits rolled, the tension that worked so well at the start had fizzled, and the ending fell flat, leaving me with a sense of a missed opportunity.There were none big boss fights or many people left alive. That dissapointed big time:(

To be honest with you, I would say that the only thing that was very interesting to me was the fact that the producers and screenwriters showed the importance of Christianity and the power of The Holy Cross!!! But that was the only thing that made me happy because it lacked big time in terms of the protagonists Faith…only The Cross was their salvation and not their nonexistent Faith 🙁 In movies like these, I find it crucial to show how Our Faith is the only way to be saved but that was not the case in this movie…so maybe that was the reason for the number of deaths

In Conclusion
In the end, Salem’s Lot (2024) might still entertain viewers who are curious or craving a dose of vampire horror – you may choose to watch it and see how it lands for you. In fact, the film received mixed reviews from critics upon release, and I find myself in agreement with that lukewarm reception. It offers a few decent scares and the appeal of King’s classic story, but from my perspective it’s not a particularly strong film as you get to watch the ending and how things turned out to be. There’s nothing egregiously awful here, but it doesn’t do enough to distinguish itself among recent horror offerings, and it ultimately left me underwhelmed. Overall, this remake is far from a disaster, but it doesn’t quite sink its teeth in deep enough to become a must-see – one might watch it out of loyalty to King’s work or simple curiosity, yet it’s likely to be a forgettable experience in the long run.
